About Litchfield

Litchfield is a rural locality in the Buloke Shire of north-western Victoria, located about 252 kilometres from Melbourne and 15 kilometres northwest of Donald near Lake Buloke, a large shallow freshwater lake. Originally known as Witchipool, European settlement began in the 1870s with farm selections, and the railway station was named after local store owner Joseph Litchfield when the Donald-Birchip line was extended in 1893. The area was a major wheat-receiving point with grain silos from 1939, though farm amalgamations since the 1960s reduced the population from a peak of 300 in 1911.
