About Lalbert
Lalbert is a town in the Shire of Gannawarra in Victoria, about 50 kilometres west of Kerang on the Swan Hill-Donald Road. The name was recorded by Major Mitchell during his trek in 1836 and is thought to derive from an Aboriginal word for the creeper that grew on the mallee trees. Lalbert lies in the heart of the Mallee wheat growing area and is a major grain receiving centre, served by a railway line now used exclusively to haul grain. Lake Lalbert, a flood-filled lake a few kilometres from town, is a significant wetland.
