About Sorrento (Vic.)

Sorrento is a coastal town at the western end of the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, on the shore of Port Phillip Bay. It was named in 1863 by Sir Charles Gavan Duffy, later Premier of Victoria, after the Italian coastal town of Sorrento, when he subdivided his Point King land for holiday homes. Sorrento is also the site of the first official European settlement in Victoria, the short-lived camp established by Lieutenant-Governor David Collins at nearby Sullivan Bay in 1803, an episode remembered as the cradle of the state. The surrounding coast is the traditional country of the Bunurong people.
