About Flinders (Vic.)
Flinders is a seaside town on the southern tip of the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, about 73 km south of Melbourne, where Western Port meets Bass Strait. Named after the explorer Matthew Flinders, who entered Port Phillip in 1802, the town began as a seasonal fishing settlement in the 1850s and later grew into a bathing resort, with its pier built in 1865 and a hotel from 1890. A submarine telegraph cable from Tasmania came ashore here in 1869, and today Flinders is known for its fishing fleet, the Blowhole, and the Mushroom Reef marine sanctuary.
