About Werribee South

Werribee South is a rural-urban suburb about 32 km south-west of Melbourne in the City of Wyndham, on the coast where the Werribee River meets Port Phillip Bay. It is almost entirely market-garden country, with around 150 vegetable farms that grow much of Australia's lettuce supply, irrigated from the Werribee River. The area was settled as an irrigation estate from 1912 and farmed by soldier settlers after the First World War, with Sicilian immigrant families arriving from the 1920s. The river mouth offers a marina, boat ramp, caravan park and a fishing beach.
