About Altona (Vic.)
Altona is a suburb in the west of Melbourne, about 13 kilometres from the central business district, within the City of Hobsons Bay. It faces Port Phillip Bay and has one of only two swimming beaches in the western suburbs, with the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail running along the shore past wetlands and parklands such as Altona Coastal Park and Cherry Lake. The area was first settled in 1842, when Alfred Langhorne built the Homestead, now preserved as Altona's oldest building.
