About Mitcham (Vic.)
Mitcham is an eastern suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, about 20 kilometres east of the city centre in the City of Whitehorse. It takes its name from Mitcham Grove, a farm owned by William Slater who grew roses and herbs, and from the 1860s the area was given over to orchards, brickmaking and pottery before suburban development from the 1950s. Schwerkolt Cottage, a restored pioneer cottage of the 1880s, is now a local history museum, and scenes of The Story of the Kelly Gang, released in 1906 and regarded as the world's first feature film, were shot here.
