About Gisborne
Gisborne is a town in the Macedon Ranges of Victoria, about 54 km north-west of Melbourne, and the largest town in the shire. The district was first settled in 1837, and the town, which grew as a service centre for the surrounding grazing country, is named after Henry Fyshe Gisborne, a colonial Commissioner of Crown Lands. It developed industries such as the Cherry timber factory, a maker of butter churns that exported overseas, and its railway station, on the Bendigo line, was built beyond the town, creating the separate settlement of New Gisborne.
