About Essendon Fields

Essendon Fields is a suburb of Melbourne about 11 km north-west of the central business district in the City of Moonee Valley, comprising Essendon Airport and the commercial areas around it. The site has been an aviation hub since 1919, when an aero club took over farmland there, and the aerodrome was gazetted in 1923. Essendon was Melbourne's international airport from the early 1950s until 1970, when the new airport at Tullamarine took over, and it has since operated as a general aviation and business centre.
