About Walhalla
Walhalla is the remains of a gold-mining town in a steep, narrow valley in the Gippsland highlands of Victoria, about 48 kilometres north of Moe and 185 kilometres east of Melbourne. Gold was discovered in late 1862 by Ned Stringer's party on the creek that now bears his name, and the rich Cohen's Reef made the Walhalla and Long Tunnel mines among the state's most productive. By 1887 Walhalla was Victoria's second-highest gold producer, before decline set in around the turn of the century.
