About Tarraville
Tarraville is a small locality on the Tarra River in South Gippsland, named after Charley Tarra, an Aboriginal guide who travelled with Pawel Strzelecki during his 1840s exploration of the region. In the 1850s it was the largest town in Gippsland, serving as the supply route from Port Albert to the goldfields, but it declined after the railway reached the area in the late 1870s. The heritage-listed Christ Church, built in 1856, is the oldest church in Gippsland and one of the few remaining structures from the town's prosperous era.
