About Stratford (Vic.)

Stratford is a town on the Avon River in Victoria, 232 kilometres east of Melbourne on the Princes Highway, in the Shire of Wellington. Settled in the 1840s and surveyed in the 1850s, the town prospered during the gold rushes to the Omeo and Dargo goldfields in the 1860s, and retains historic buildings including the RSL Hall, Holy Trinity Church and the 1884 Post Office. It is known for its annual Shakespeare on the River festival, reflecting the town's connection with the name Stratford-on-Avon.
