About Stirling (Vic.)
Stirling is a former gold-mining township in East Gippsland, Victoria, on the Haunted Stream goldfield in rugged mountain country between Bairnsdale and Omeo. Alluvial gold was discovered there in 1863, and the discovery of rich quartz reefs in the early 1880s grew the settlement into a town named Stirling in 1889 after government geologist James Stirling. At its peak it had two hotels, a post office, police station and school before the gold ran out and the township was largely deserted by the 1920s. Today the old townsite is reached by four-wheel-drive track along Haunted Stream, which flows into the Tambo River.
