About San Remo (Vic.)
San Remo is a coastal town at the western tip of the Anderson Peninsula in West Gippsland, Victoria, 122 km south-east of Melbourne, at the mainland end of the only road bridge onto Phillip Island. It grew as a fishing village, a role remembered by the San Remo Fishermen's Co-operative, whose jetty hosts a daily pelican feeding, and by a memorial to fishermen lost at sea. From the 1840s a port at nearby Griffiths Point exported wattle bark and farm produce. Named after the Italian resort in 1888, the town is a gateway for visitors to Phillip Island and the base of a tidal-power test project.
