About Bass
Bass is a small town in the Bass Coast Shire of Gippsland, Victoria, about 113 kilometres south-east of Melbourne, where the Bass Highway crosses the Bass River a few kilometres inland from Western Port Bay. The district was settled in 1835 by Samuel Anderson, establishing one of Victoria's earliest permanent settlements, and the village was surveyed in 1863 as Woolamai before taking the name Bass in 1896. It is named after explorer George Bass, who discovered Western Port in 1798, and lies in a dairying district.
