About Morwell
Morwell is a town in the Latrobe Valley of Gippsland in Victoria, about 152 km east of Melbourne, and the seat of the City of Latrobe. The town grew around its railway station from the 1870s, and its name is likely a Gunai word meaning inhabitants of the swamp. For most of the 20th century Morwell was at the centre of the brown coal power industry, fuelling the Hazelwood Power Station from the adjoining open-cut mine; the plant closed in 2017 and its chimneys were demolished in 2020. The town is also known for its award-winning Centenary Rose Garden.
