About Cann River
Cann River is a town in the East Gippsland region of Victoria, at the junction of the Princes and Monaro highways beside the Cann River, whose name is thought to be of Aboriginal origin. The district was first taken up by pastoralists in the late 1870s and a post office opened in 1890. The present townsite developed around 1928, when a brick hotel was built and the Princes Highway was routed past it. Today Cann River is a popular stop for travellers between Melbourne and Sydney and a base for the nearby Croajingolong, Coopracambra, Lind and Alfred national parks.
