About Benambra
Benambra is a town on the Omeo Plains in the Australian Alps of East Gippsland, about 28 km north-east of Omeo and 430 km east of Melbourne, on the doorstep of the Alpine National Park. The plains were among the first parts of Victoria taken up by European squatters in the mid-1830s, and gold finds on Livingstone Creek and the Gibbo River opened the area for farming from the 1870s. Today Benambra is a grazing district known for sheep and cattle, with the historic United Church, built in 1905, a landmark on the hill above the town.
