About Upper Gundowring
Upper Gundowring is a rural locality in the Kiewa Valley of north-east Victoria, in the Alpine Shire, along the middle reaches of the Kiewa River a few kilometres east of Dederang. The area was once part of the Gundowring pastoral run, taken up in 1838, whose name is thought to come from an Aboriginal word describing a place with water suitable for camping. Farmers occupied the valley in the 1860s, and grazing has been the main activity, with a later trend to dairying. The local school closed in 1953 when Kiewa Consolidated School opened.
