About Swanpool

Swanpool is a rural village on the Midland Highway about 23 km south of Benalla in north-east Victoria. The name is thought to come from swans resting on the nearby Broken River, and the village grew as a stopping place on the highway between Benalla and Mansfield. A dairy co-operative and butter factory operated from the 1890s until the 1970s, and the Swanpool Cinema, a rare still-operating memorial hall cinema, is the town's main attraction. Lake Nillahcootie, in the foothills of the Victorian High Country, lies to the south.
