About Torquay (Vic.)
Torquay is a coastal town on the Surf Coast of Victoria, 21 km south of Geelong and the official start of the Great Ocean Road. Named in 1892 after a settler's English home town, it is best known as a surfing centre, with Bells Beach nearby hosting the world's longest-running surfing competition, and it is where the surfwear companies Rip Curl and Quiksilver were founded in the 1960s and 1970s. Torquay Surf Life Saving Club is the oldest in Victoria.
