About Jan Juc
Jan Juc is a coastal suburb of Torquay in the Surf Coast Shire, Victoria, about 100 km southwest of Melbourne. Its name derives from a Wadawurrung Aboriginal word, with suggested meanings including "milk", "ironbark", or "goose". The inland locality now called Bellbrae was originally named Jan Juc until renamed in 1922. Jan Juc Beach, bounded by high cliffs between Rocky Point and Bird Rock, is patrolled by the local Surf Life Saving Club. The beach's Oligocene-age formations have yielded fossilised remains of extinct whales, including Janjucetus hunderi.
