About Inverleigh
Inverleigh is a town on the Leigh River, 28 km west of Geelong and 87 km from Melbourne, divided between the Golden Plains and Surf Coast Shires. The river was named by surveyor J.H. Wedge in 1835 after his Tasmanian farm, and the district was the site of the Weatherboard Station, whose homestead is claimed to be Victoria's first weatherboard home. Inverleigh grew as a stop on the road to Lorne and is now largely a commuter town for Geelong. A prefabricated iron cottage on Weatherboard Road is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.
