About Tarilta

Tarilta is a rural locality and former gold-mining town in the Shires of Hepburn and Mount Alexander in central Victoria, about 12 kilometres south of Castlemaine. Gold was first discovered there in 1853, and remnants of the mining era including old shafts, chimneys and ruins survive in the surrounding bushland. Tarilta Creek flows through the locality, supporting walking tracks and dry open eucalypt forest within the broader Castlemaine Diggings heritage area.
