About Goornong

Goornong is a rural township on the Midland Highway in north-central Victoria, about 25 kilometres north-east of Bendigo. The first settlement grew up with the construction of the Bendigo to Echuca railway, which opened in 1864 and made the town the service centre of an agricultural district beyond the Bendigo goldfields. Grain growing has long underpinned the district, and the town retains grain silos and a soldiers memorial hall; the name is thought to derive from an Aboriginal word.
