About Mount Lonarch

Mount Lonarch is a rural locality in the Shire of Pyrenees in central Victoria, about 177 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, taking its name from the Mount Lonarch peak among the surrounding forested hills. The district was an active sawmilling area, and a heritage-listed sawmill site in the locality, worked from the 1860s, shows evidence of nearly continuous timber cutting for more than sixty years. The Mount Lonarch State School, one of Victoria's oldest public schools, opened in 1850 and closed in 1966, with a new schoolhouse built in 1916.
