About Langi Kal Kal
Langi Kal Kal is a rural locality in the Pyrenees Shire of western Victoria, near Trawalla on the Western Highway east of Beaufort, about two hours' drive from Melbourne. Its name is an Aboriginal term meaning 'resting place for the singing cicada'. The district was settled in the 1830s as a large pastoral property, and the locality is best known for the Langi Kal Kal prison, a minimum-security establishment opened as a reformatory in 1950 that now operates a farming and cattle program.
