About Clarendon (Vic.)
Clarendon is a village on the Midland Highway about 20 km south-east of Ballarat in central Victoria. It was originally known as Corduroy Bridge, after the planked crossing over Williamsons Creek, and took the name Clarendon in 1857, reputedly for the British Foreign Minister, the Earl of Clarendon. The village had two hotels and a Presbyterian school in the 1850s, and its undulating country of fertile valleys suited farming. The Geelong to Ballarat railway, opened in 1862, passed about 5 km away.
