About Blackwood (Vic.)
Blackwood is a town in the Shire of Moorabool in Victoria, set on the Lerderderg River within the Wombat State Forest, 89 kilometres north-west of Melbourne. Gold was discovered there in 1854, and at its peak in 1855 the Mount Blackwood goldfield drew an estimated 13,000 diggers who worked the creeks and, later, rich quartz reefs such as Simmons Reef and the Sultan mine. Today Blackwood is a small township known for its historic buildings and mineral springs on the banks of the Lerderderg River.
