About Bakery Hill
Bakery Hill is an inner-city suburb of Ballarat in Victoria, the smallest in the city by area and population, and a mix of residential and commercial use since the gold rush. Named for a bakery that stood on the site from the 1850s, it is best known as the meeting place where miners swore the Southern Cross oath before the Eureka Rebellion of 1854, on the high ground where Peter Lalor raised the Eureka Flag. The Welcome Nugget, one of the largest gold nuggets ever found, was discovered there in 1858.
