About Surprise Bay

Surprise Bay is a rural locality at the southern end of King Island in Tasmania, about 28 km south of Currie, where the Southern Ocean meets Bass Strait. The Bowling family were among the first to take up land on the island, settling here in 1889, and the district is still largely given over to beef cattle farming. The locality's coastline, including the break at Black Point, was where the island's first surfers took to the water in 1958.
