About Westbury (Tas.)

Westbury is a town in central northern Tasmania, on the Bass Highway between Launceston and Deloraine. Laid out in 1828, it grew as a garrison village in the 1830s, with troops barracked around a central village green that is claimed to be Australia's only traditional English-style village green. Many early settlers were Irish, and the town has held a St Patrick's Festival since early in the 19th century. Westbury is the headquarters of the Meander Valley Council and hosts the poppy-processing firm Tasmanian Alkaloids.
