About St Helens (Tas.)
St Helens is the largest town on the north-east coast of Tasmania, situated on Georges Bay 148 kilometres from Launceston. Originally used as a whaling base in the early 19th century, tin was discovered at Blue Tier in 1874 and the town became a shipping port. Named after St Helens on the Isle of Wight, the town is known as the game fishing capital of Tasmania and has a significant oyster industry. The St Helens Important Bird Area, a major seabird breeding site, is adjacent to the town. St Columba Falls, one of Tasmania's highest waterfalls, is 35 kilometres west.
