About Akaroa

Akaroa is a coastal rural locality on St Helens Point in north-east Tasmania, in the Break O'Day local government area, about 13 kilometres north-east of St Helens. It fronts Georges Bay at its narrow point, bordered by the waters of Georges Bay and the Tasman Sea. The name comes from a property named in 1946 by a settler who had lived in Akaroa in New Zealand; it is believed to be a Maori word meaning 'long harbour' or 'peaceful waters'. In 1834 a military station was established at Akaroa to intercept escaped convicts.
