Mount Stuart is a residential suburb of Hobart, Tasmania, lying on a ridge extending from a foothill of kunanyi/Mount Wellington known as Knocklofty. The suburb is on the traditional lands of the Mouheneenner band of the South East tribe of Aboriginal Tasmanians. It was named after a ship called Mountstuart Elphinstone which visited Hobart in 1836 bringing news that the unpopular Lieutenant-Governor George Arthur was being recalled, prompting locals to celebrate by naming streets after the vessel. The suburb features Knocklofty Reserve bushland, a water reservoir with views of Hobart and the Mount Stuart Lookout offering panoramic views of the city, Mount Dromedary and the northern suburbs. Mount Stuart Primary School opened in 1957 on the former Paraclete Estate. The suburb had a population of 2,399 at the 2016 census.
