About Bridgewater (Tas.)

Bridgewater is a northern suburb of Hobart, Tasmania, situated on the eastern shore of the River Derwent within the Municipality of Brighton. Originally known as Green Point, the locality takes its name from the historic causeway constructed across the river between 1830 and 1836 by convict labour, one of the largest convict-built engineering works in Australia. The convict-built causeway, the Old Watch House (1838), and successive bridge structures over the Derwent are listed on the Tasmanian Heritage Register. The current Bridgewater Bridge, opened in 1946, is a steel vertical lift bridge and the largest surviving lift span bridge in Australia. Bridgewater serves as a key transport link on the Midland Highway, connecting Hobart with Tasmania's northern regions.
