About Paruna

Paruna is a township in eastern South Australia on the Browns Well Highway, about 237 kilometres east of Adelaide, where the road crosses the former Barmera railway line. The government town was proclaimed in 1914, a year after the railway arrived from Adelaide, and the name is an Aboriginal word meaning "stopping place". Paruna was the seat of the District Council of Brown's Well until the 1997 merger that created the District Council of Loxton Waikerie; the railway line has since been closed and removed.
