About Mutooroo
Mutooroo is a remote pastoral locality in the Curnamona Province of the South Australian outback, located about 60 kilometres southwest of Broken Hill near the Barrier Highway. Named after the Mutooroo Pastoral Company established by Peter Waite and Sir Thomas Elder in the 1860s to 1880s, the area was developed from waterless country into a major sheep and cattle station. The Mutooroo Copper Mine operated from 1887 to 1914 as the largest copper producer in the Olary Province, and Havilah Resources holds significant copper, cobalt, and gold resources. The first pilots to fly from England to Australia, Ross and Keith Smith in 1919, spent their early years at Mutooroo Station.
