About Hackham

Hackham is an outer metropolitan suburb of Adelaide, South Australia, situated approximately 25 kilometres south of the city centre within the City of Onkaparinga. The township was surveyed in 1856 on Section 25 of the Hundred of Noarlunga for Edward Castle, who arrived in South Australia in 1839 and is believed to have named it after his former home in Gloucestershire, England. Alternative origins for the name have been proposed, including early colonist J.B. Hack and previous landowner James Kingdon. The area was predominantly used for cereal farming until suburban subdivisions transformed it from the 1960s onward. The Coast to Vines rail trail, constructed on the former Willunga railway line that served Hackham from 1915 to 1969, passes through the suburb. Hackham lies near the Onkaparinga River and the McLaren Vale wine region.
