About Smithfield (SA)
Smithfield is a northern suburb of Adelaide in the City of Playford, South Australia, located 30 kilometres northeast of the Adelaide city centre. Originally named Smith's Creek after Scottish pioneer John Smith who was granted land in 1847, the town was established in 1854 when Smith subdivided his land. By the 1880s it had a church, public house, railway station, telegraph station and school. The Smithfield Speedway (1926–c.1930) is believed to be the first speedway in the world promoted by a motorcycle club. The suburb is home to Smithfield Recreation Park, a former WWII munitions facility and a post-war migrant hostel that operated from 1949 to 1971.
