About Hahndorf
Hahndorf is a historic German settlement in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia, located 28 kilometres south-east of Adelaide and seven kilometres from Mount Barker. Australia's oldest surviving German settlement, it was established in 1839 by Lutheran migrants from Prussia, many of whom arrived aboard the ship Zebra on 28 December 1838. Named after Captain Dirk Meinerts Hahn of the Zebra, the town's name was changed to Ambleside during World War I due to anti-German sentiment, before being restored by the South Australia Nomenclature Act of 1935. Hahndorf features traditional fachwerk German architecture, the German Arms Hotel, Hahndorf Inn, St Michael's Lutheran Church and The Cedars, home of watercolour artist Hans Heysen.
