About Tara (Qld)
Tara is a rural town and locality in the Western Downs Region of Queensland, located 299 kilometres west of Brisbane on the Darling Downs. The traditional custodians are the Baranggum people. The town was surveyed in May 1910 and named after the local pastoral run gazetted on 25 March 1852, assumed to reference the Hill of Tara in County Meath, Ireland. The Commercial Hotel features two murals by Hugh Sawrey painted in 1960 depicting scenes from the song Waltzing Matilda. Southwood National Park, a remnant of the brigalow belt, is nearby. The economy is based on wheat, beef, wool and coal seam gas. The Glenmorgan railway line traverses the locality with two railway stations. The town gained national attention as the site of the December 2022 Wieambilla police shootings.
