About Moonie
Moonie is a rural town in the Western Downs of Queensland, at the intersection of the Moonie and Leichhardt Highways. The name comes from the Moonie River, recorded as Mooni by explorer Sir Thomas Mitchell in 1846. In December 1961 the district produced Australia's first commercial oil field, which is still in operation, and the surrounding country also produces grain, beef cattle and prime lambs.
