About Miles

Miles is a rural town and locality in the Western Downs Region of Queensland, located 340 kilometres west of Brisbane on the Warrego Highway. Formerly known as Dogwood Crossing, the area is situated on Dogwood Creek named by German explorer Ludwig Leichhardt in 1844 and was renamed in honour of Queensland Colonial Secretary William Miles. The Miles Historical Village Museum at 141 Murilla Street features 34 buildings including 15 historic structures and is regarded as one of the best historical villages in Australia, used as a film set. The economy is based on agriculture and cropping including wheat, sorghum, barley and cotton, cattle and sheep grazing, timber production and a developing bentonite clay mining industry. The town hosts the Miles Back to the Bush Festival every two years in September and is connected by The Westlander train service from Brisbane to Charleville twice weekly.
