Crows Nest is a rural town on the Darling Downs of Queensland, on the New England Highway about 43 km from Toowoomba and 158 km from Brisbane. The district was first settled for sheep grazing in 1849 and the town declared in 1876, growing as a sawmilling and dairying centre served by a branch railway from 1886. The town's name is said to come from Jimmy Crow, an Aboriginal man who lived in a hollow tree near the police station, and a statue raised in 1969 in his honour is believed to be the only memorial in Australia to an Aboriginal person after whom a town was named. Crows Nest National Park, 6 km east, has granite outcrops and waterfalls.
