About Condamine
Condamine is a rural town in the Western Downs of Queensland, on the Condamine River, named by the explorer Allan Cunningham in 1827 after an aide to Governor Darling. The settlement grew from a river crossing used by bullock teams, and in the late 1860s the local blacksmith Samuel William Jones made the first Condamine Bell from a saw blade, a bell hung on cattle that gave the town its fame. A large replica stands in the Condamine Bell Park in the main street.
