About The Gap (NT)
The Gap is a suburb of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, located at the Heavitree Gap 3 kilometres south of the Alice Springs town centre. Named by Overland Telegraph line surveyor William Whitfield Mills after his former school in Heavitree, Devon, England in 1872, the suburb is on the traditional Country of the Arrernte people. Heavitree Gap is a water gap in the MacDonnell Ranges through which the Todd River flows and carries both the Stuart Highway and the Adelaide-Darwin railway. It is an important sacred site for the Arrernte people associated with Arlperenye Beetle Dreaming. Every vehicle and train entering Alice Springs from the south passes through the gap. The Alice Springs Hospital, the major hospital for central Australia, is located in The Gap.
