About Cobourg
Cobourg is an extremely remote locality on the Cobourg Peninsula in the Northern Territory, about 350 kilometres north-east of Darwin. The peninsula was named by Phillip Parker King in 1818 after Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg. The ruins of Victoria Settlement at Port Essington, an early British colonial outpost from 1838 to 1849, lie within the locality, and the park includes a Ramsar wetland of international significance, the world's largest herd of pure-strain banteng, and excellent reef and sport fishing.
