About Adelaide River
Adelaide River is a small town in the Northern Territory, 116 km south of Darwin, at the crossing of the Stuart Highway over the Adelaide River. It played a central role in Australia's Second World War effort, becoming a supply and communications base after the bombing of Darwin in 1942, when the civilian exodus south was nicknamed the Adelaide River Stakes. The Adelaide River War Cemetery, with 435 wartime burials, lies beside the town.
