About Winmalee

Winmalee is a suburb of Sydney in the Blue Mountains, about 77 kilometres west of the central business district, surrounded by the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains National Park. Originally known as North Springwood, it was proclaimed an independent suburb in 1972 and takes its name from a word chosen in a local competition as an Aboriginal word for 'north', although it had not been used by the area's traditional Dharug owners. In October 2013 a bushfire destroyed 196 homes in Winmalee and the nearby settlements of Yellow Rock and Springwood.
